Detroit Teens Remove Invasive Plant Species

NWF's Great Lakes Natural Resource Center is partnering with the Detroit Public Schools to provide professional development and support for middle and high school teachers. As a result, teachers can further integrate global warming education into existing curriculums and to develop global warming solution action projects with their students. NWF wants a better understanding of the barriers to teaching about climate change in Detroit classrooms to help remove some of those barriers to foster increased global warming education.

Action projects will be developed to involve student-driven ideas and have a connection to the larger school and local communities.

Teachers will receive a stipend and SB-CEU credits for attending a kickoff professional development workshop. The workshop will include global warming content information, curricular resources such as climateclassroom.org and lesson plans for An Inconvenient Truth, connections to state standards, and time to brainstorm about possible projects for the classroom.

Local community partners will also be asked to attend to showcase their programs and the support they are able to provide to teacher and student action projects.

After submitting a grant application, mini-grants will be awarded to help teachers implement their projects with their students. Mini-grants will be distributed to the schools of participating teachers. Teachers will be responsible for attending two additional meetings to share ideas, challenges and successes, as well as writing up a brief summary of their project when they have accomplished their goals.

NWF will use write ups and success stories in grant reports, written media such as the climateclassroom.org website, and as examples for other schools who may wish to participate in the future. The projects will be completed in the fall of 2008, with written summaries completed by December. Watch this space for updates on these projects.
